Milhiem is an ethnic group inhabiting North East India and Myanmar. They belong to the old kuki clans Of Manipur and recognised under the Kuki-Chin-Mizo group. They Believe their proginator come from a cave and they refer it as Khul or khur. Their history is based on oral tradition, folklore and myth handed down from one generation to the next generation. And their society is categorise into clans and subclans. Village serve as the highest unit of their society and village land belong to the village chief, which is consider to be the head of their clan or subclan. Certain Clans and Subclans are also found scattered in old kuki tribes such as Chothe, Purum, Koireng, Kom, Lamkang, Aimol, Maring, Tarao, Vaiphei, Paite and also among the Thadou-kuki tribe.

Origin

Milhiem ethnic group claim their origin from a cave which they refer to as Khul or khur. According to their folklore and myth their Progenitor Hangmi[1] with his follower originate from khul after killing the serpent called Gulhiemnu, keeper and guardian of the cave opening. Some writer Called them as Milhem or Meriem[2].or Mirem or Marrem. Hangmi was the Bepa of Shongthu who was also a member of the group that originate from khul. Hangmi is recorded as Hangmang by some writer. Hangmi is the Progenitor of Lupho, Lupheng, and Misao/Mikan clans. Shongthu is the progenitor of Doungel, Hangsing, Chongloi, Haokip, Kipgen, and Thadou clans. Zahong another member of khul origin group is the progenitor of Sauntak and khaute clans. The three progenitor represent separate and distinct family genealogy.

Culture

 

Folklore

They have many Myths, folklores and folktales and some of them are: Thilha-Gal, Lhangeineng, Lhanghal-Changvai, Leivon Sa-sem etc.

 

 Marriage

Marriage outside the clans was strictly prohibited and marriage was possible within certain clan and subclan. Elopment is also found. But all these taboos are now not strictly practice.

 

Religion

They were animist who believe in nature and environment and believe in one supreme god which they called Pathien. And also practice village and house god worshipped called Indoi. All religious ceremony were held and supervise under the religious head called Thiempu who is consider next to the village chief. Animal sacrifice is practice for appeasing and cleansing ceremony as well as for other ritual ceremony. During the early 20th century many of them got converted into christainity by both foreign and local missionaries. Presently Every Milhiem village churches do not affiliate to any of the ethnic based denominational churches and remain as Local churche except a few village where affiliation to ethnic denominational churches is found.

 

Economy

The economy is mainly dependent on agriculture. They practice both wetland and Jhum cultivation. There are also in government employees and Many in Non government organisation.

Milhiem Community.

1. Hangmi Union, (NEI).

2. Hangmi Student Union, Manipur(NEI).

3. Apart from the above Union various district and block level org exist.

4.The Community is Recorded as Milhem tribe in all records , but after long period of research they have accepted to be called as Hangmi after their Progenator. 

"Hangmi progenitor of the milhiem's is known and recorded as :The fearless warrior,  was a party of  Shongthu, Zahong and others who came out from the widely believe subterranian  land, called Noimigam through Khul. A cave like  to make new settlement in Chungkhogam (as is recorded in oral history of the Kuki-Chin-Mizo)".
